Event arranged to coincide with COP26 #TogetherforourPlanet campaign
Organised by REPIC, the largest household waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) producer compliance scheme in the UK, working with East Lothian Council, the WEEE scheme recruited local volunteers from its treatment partners to lend a helping hand. Employees from Beech Environmental, CCL (North) LTD, GAP Group NE, Restructa and Shore Recycling all joined the Scottish-based commercial team members from REPIC in walking the coastline to Skateraw, collecting several sacks of litter.
East Lothian Council, a REPIC partner in the collection and treatment of WEEE, kindly provided the equipment for the team to use on the day.
Information on litter types, quantities and locations was also recorded on the Marine Conservation website. This invaluable data helps build a profile of the location, providing insight into the most common type of material found in each 100m stretch of beach to enable a targeted campaign for change.
Graeme Milne, Strategic Business Development Director at REPIC, said: “It’s great to be able to have the opportunity to do our bit for our local environment by helping to keep our beaches clean.
He added: “In just a few hours, the team had gathered up a lot of plastic from along the coastline at Dunbar. It does show that you don’t need much time to make a difference. By everybody working together to create a cleaner environment, we can build stronger, healthier communities and make a positive difference.”
REPIC, collect, treat and responsibly recycle waste electricals on behalf of manufacturers of household electrical products, which helps to reduce the carbon dioxide emissions associated with producing new raw materials. In addition, it has been undertaking a number of additional initiatives to promote and support COP26. The UK’s Government campaign, #TogetherforourPlanet, has been created to engage people with COP26 and inspire positive climate action.
REPIC has contributed to other #onestepgreener events including litter picking days in communities in which it operates in, tree planting activities and rolling out a new company green travel policy to minimise any adverse impact work related travel may have on the environment. #Onestepgreener showcases how people are doing their bit and inspires others to do the same in their communities in support of climate change.
