The aim of the Directive is to reduce the amount of packaging going to landfill by setting recycling and recovery targets for waste packaging.
The UK Government introduced the Producer Responsibility (Packaging Waste) Regulations in 1997 which was implemented under the principle of shared producer responsibility.
The REPIC packaging scheme helps the large range of companies affected by this legislation to comply. This includes manufacturers, retailers, lease companies and importers.
The Packaging Waste Regulations
Packaging is anything that is used to contain, protect, deliver or present goods. Goods could be raw materials or processed items.
Packaging can take many forms and includes boxes, pallets, labels, containers, tubes, bags, sacks, tape, wrapping and binding and tying material. For the Government’s definition of packaging, click here.
