As we gear up for another impactful environmental advocacy initiative, REPIC is proud to step up and continue our support of the WEEE Forum’s International E-Waste Day (IEWD) 2024.

This year’s campaign, set for October 14th, aims to drive awareness globally, encouraging the recycling of old, unwanted electricals.

Last year, almost 200 companies from 55 countries took part: driving awareness by organising events, e-waste collections, social media and press campaigns.

The Mission: Turning Forgotten Electricals into Valuable Resources

According to the latest UN’s General E-waste Monitor, e-waste has grown globally 5 times faster than formal recycling collection rates since 2010. To help tackle this issue the WEEE Forum, the international association representing producer responsibility organisations, and its members aims to highlight the importance of responsible management of e-waste in their communities.

Under the campaign slogan: “Join the E-Waste Hunt – Retrieve, Recycle, and Revive!”, consumers will be inspired to declutter their homes of unused devices. Anything with a plug, cable, or battery, including the often ‘forgotten’ small electronics: old mobile phones, cables, USB keys, game consoles and other devices that are often kept out of sight in drawers. By doing so, everyone can contribute to resource conservation and energy and CO2 savings.

REPIC’s Role: Leading the Charge in the UK

As the UK lead for the WEEE Forum’s International E-Waste Day, REPIC is supporting and participating in the nationwide campaign for IEWD coordinated again this year here by Material Focus.

Through Material Focus, the UK campaign focuses on raising awareness about the importance of recycling cables. Launching ‘The Great Cable Challenge’ a nationwide campaign aimed at tackling the millions of cables sitting idle across UK homes.

Graeme Milne, REPIC’s Chief Executive, expressed his support for the awareness day, commenting:

“International E-Waste Day gathers more interest and momentum each year. This dedicated awareness day for WEEE acts as a crucial reminder of the value hidden in the forgotten electricals in our homes. By encouraging our communities to retrieve and recycle these items, we all have the potential to keep more valuable resources in circulation. REPIC is proud to lend its support to this awareness day and invites everyone to join the e-waste hunt.”
