Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) requires producers to take financial responsibility for their products through their entire lifecycle. This moves away from the linear approach of existing producer responsibility legislation, which largely focuses on waste, and instead aims to achieve a more circular economy in which precious resources are kept in use for longer.
The UK Government has already announced its plans for implementing EPR for Packaging, and consultations on introducing EPR for WEEE and Batteries are expected later this year.
EPR will introduce additional reporting and financial obligations all of which you may be required to act upon. The changes could ultimately influence the way in which you design your products and packaging.
